11 steps to creating the perfect blog post
Even for a veteran blogger, writing a post can sometimes be a daunting process and with so much competition vying for readership, implementing these 11 tactics will elevate your blog post to another level.
As tempting as it may be to start bashing away at your keyboard once you have an idea, resist! I’ve turned away from posts that quickly trail off topic as a result of an obvious lack of structure. To avoid this, bullet point your ideas first and then flesh them out as you go along.
Target your post
Who is going to be reading what you’ve written? Always tailor your writing style for your target audience, not yourself. The style, presentation and overall design of your website should make it clear your post is for them.
Give your post a goal
This may be incredibly obvious, but if you don’t know the purpose of your blog post, your readers definitely won’t. Whether it is solving a problem or creating a post that will stimulate discussion within your community, it must be clear what your writing aims to achieve and what your readers will get out of it.
Pay attention to the title
This is probably the easiest thing to neglect, but arguably the most important. The attention span of the modern reader is so short that if you haven’t already grabbed them with the title, there’s virtually no chance of them finishing the first paragraph. It is not easy to keep the title short, punchy and informative which is why this needs a lot of work.
Make it easy to read
Another obvious one, but it’s surprising how many people still choose to write in large blocks of text, with no paragraphs or spacing. The majority of people skim read articles, so make it easier for them to do so. Frequent paragraphs, clear subheadings and writing that is easy to read will see them to the end of your post.
Don’t be camera shy
Even if you are terrible with a camera, everything looks better with pictures. It’s surprising what an Instagram filter can do.
The best blogs intermesh helpful links to more material into their writing which provides real value to the reader. This generates more hits for you and more opportunities for sharing. Links to other sites that genuinely benefit the reader will keep them coming back for more, as they’ll see you as an expert in your field and a source of valuable information.
Try alternative media
A friend of mine hit a bit of a lull with her beauty blog and decided to start doing videos to accompany her posts. It proved to be an instant success and she was inundated with comments, praising her new approach. She’s now looking to launch a separate YouTube channel.
Share the love
Posts go viral because they’re easily shared. Create links to social media sites and watch your post rise in popularity. And of course you should use your own social media channels to let everyone know about your latest post.
If someone has taken their time to read and comment on your blog post, always reply (but don’t feed the trolls). It gives that personal touch that other websites lack and allows you to find out more about your target audience, potentially creating new ideas for future posts.
Practice makes perfect
Nobody was born knowing how to blog, therefore write often and remember you don’t have to publish everything you finish. Be critical and selective.
Stick to these 11 rules and your blog will get the traffic it deserves. Well, what are you waiting for? Get writing.
